About Fort Clark Springs, Texas
Fort Clark Springs sits on the southern edge of Brackettville, the seat of Kinney County. It stands on the grounds of Fort Clark, an Army post founded on June 20, 1852, beside Las Moras Springs. Maj. Joseph H. LaMotte led the two companies of the First Infantry, C and E, that set up the fort.
Most of the post that stands today was laid out and built in the 1870s, and its historic district has changed little since then. In 1971 North American Towns of Texas bought the old fort and developed it as a private community for recreation and retirement. The 2020 census counted 1,215 people living there.
- Streets named for officersMany well-known officers served at Fort Clark over the years, and the community remembers them in the names of its streets and buildings. Among the names are Mackenzie, Shafter, Bullis, Bliss, Wainright and Patton.
- Golf on the parade groundThe old parade ground, where soldiers once gathered at the center of the post, is now a carefully kept par-three golf course.
- The Old Guardhouse MuseumThe Fort Clark Historical Society runs the Old Fort Clark Guardhouse Museum, which displays much of the post's military history.
