About Fort McKinley, Ohio

Fort McKinley is a community of 3,473 people in Harrison Township, Montgomery County, on Salem Avenue northwest of downtown Dayton. The land was platted in 1914, and five years later the neighborhood gained its best-known landmark when the Miami Valley Golf Club opened for play on June 3, 1919.

  • Laid out by Donald RossThe club hired Donald Ross to lay out an 18-hole course across 154 acres. The Olmsted Brothers, the landscape architecture firm, were brought in to shape the grounds around the fairways. The course was finished and opened in June 1919.
  • Bobby Jones in 1931In 1931 the club staged a golf exhibition to raise money for charity, the first such event around Dayton. Its star was Robert Tyre Jones, who in 1930 had taken the U.S. and British Open titles along with both national Amateur championships. A crowd of 4,000 spectators came out to watch him play.
  • The 1957 PGA ChampionshipThe course went on to host several championship tournaments, and in 1957 it held the National PGA Championship. The golf course and its clubhouse were nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
