About Vandalia, Ohio
Vandalia is a Montgomery County city about 10 miles north of Dayton, between the Great Miami and Stillwater rivers. Its transportation history extends from early roads and rail service to the junction of Interstates 70 and 75. The 2020 census recorded 15,209 residents.
- Early SettlementBenjamin Wilhelm settled near today's U.S. Routes 40 and 25-A in 1838; the community incorporated in 1848, with Wilhelm as its first mayor.
- Railroad ArrivalFreight and passenger trains reached Vandalia in 1851 when the Dayton & Michigan Railroad began serving the growing community.
- Historic CrossroadsThe National Road and Dixie Highway routes were later succeeded by Interstate 70 and Interstate 75.
- Parks and RecreationThe area has more than thirty parks, including Helke Park and the Vandalia Sports Complex, while Taylorsville MetroPark contains the historic village of Tadmor.
