About Fredonia, Alabama
The New Hope Rosenwald School at Fredonia was built around 1915 as a one-teacher school for African American children. It cost 1,200 dollars: the Julius Rosenwald Fund gave 400, the African American community raised 400, and the local white community gave 400. J. A. and Sue Simmons gave the land, and the school took its name from nearby New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Children studied there until 1964, when they moved to the Five Points School.
The New Hope School at Fredonia followed Design No. 11, a one-teacher plan drawn by W. A. Hazel of the architecture department at Tuskegee Institute. Folding doors split its classroom from its work room, so the building could also serve as a community center.
