About Lanett, Alabama

Lanett is a city of 6,970 people in Chambers County, on the Chattahoochee River where Alabama meets Georgia. Families from West Point, Georgia, just across the river, began settling here in the 1840s, and they called the new place Bluffton, probably for the bluff it sat on above the water. Bluffton's children crossed over to West Point for school, and the town was incorporated in 1865 or 1866.

The Lanett Cotton Mills opened in 1894, and in February 1895 the town took a new name made from the surnames of two textile men, Lafayette Lanier and Theodore Bennett. The town grew quickly around its mills, from 777 people in 1890 to 2,909 in 1900 and 3,820 in 1910. The mills stayed the area's biggest employer into the late twentieth century, until textile companies sent the jobs overseas, and by 2009 none of them were still running.

  • Last Confederate fort to fallPart of the site of Fort Tyler lies inside Lanett's city limits. It was the final Confederate fort taken in the Civil War.
  • Smallpox in 1903A smallpox epidemic struck Lanett in 1903. Homes were quarantined and fumigated, and the town set up a quarantine hospital for the sick. That same year the city was putting in electric street lights, and a new water system followed in 1904, eight years after the first one was built in 1896.
  • Taking over from the millAround 1917 the city bought the electric utility that the Lanett Cotton Mills had been running, the same year sewer service arrived. In 1921 Lanett built a train depot for two lines: the Chattahoochee Valley Railway Company, which the mills ran, and the Western Railway of Alabama. For many years the town counted on West Point's firefighters, until it formed a fire department of its own in 1956.
  • First school in 1914Lanett built its first school in 1914. Fire destroyed it in 1923, and the town put it back up the next year. Millard Fuller, who went on to found Habitat for Humanity, graduated from Lanett High School.
