About Valley, Alabama

Valley is a city of 10,529 people in Chambers County, on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River where Alabama meets Georgia. The Creeks lived here first, and white settlers moved in after the Creeks were driven out in 1836. The land stayed mostly farms until two large textile mills went up in the 1860s, and the West Point Manufacturing Company's mill towns of Langdale and Riverview grew around them. A third and fourth mill followed in the early 1900s, and the villages of Shawmut and Fairfax took shape beside them.

For most of the twentieth century the four mill villages had no town government. As textiles stopped driving the local economy, the villages came to depend more on Chambers County for public services, so in April 1979 they opened talks to merge. A key promise of the deal was that the new town would charge no property taxes. Voters passed the plan by a wide margin on April 22, 1980, and the city was named for the area's old nickname, "The Valley." A new city hall complex opened in 1985.

  • The Iron BridgeA flood once brought down the old bridge across the Chattahoochee River. Around 1920, builders took material saved from that wreck and used it to put up the Iron Bridge over Moore's Creek, which still stands in Valley.
  • Day on the River since 2008Each May, on Memorial Day weekend, the city holds Day on the River at the Old Shawmut Airport. The festival brings a barbecue championship, a fishing tournament, live music, plenty of food and a fireworks show.
  • A trail on the old railwayWhen the Chattahoochee Valley Railway was gone, its bed became a walking track 7.1 miles long through the city.
  • Factory jobs return in 2009Decades after the mills faded, a Kia Motors Manufacturing plant opened in 2009 just across the state line in Georgia, five miles northeast of Valley. Businesses that supply the plant soon opened in Chambers County, and manufacturing work came back to the area.
