About Freeport, Florida
Freeport is a city of 5,861 people in Walton County, Florida, on two creeks that drain toward Choctawhatchee Bay. The town is said to have begun around 1830, and its name came from its dock where Four Mile Creek meets Lafayette Creek, because boats could tie up there without paying anything.
Before modern roads, water was the easiest way to haul goods, so lumber and crops moved down the Choctawhatchee River and across the bay. Sawmills, logging crews and turpentine works kept Freeport busy, and it led the county's economy until the railroad came to DeFuniak Springs and trade shifted north.
- Senate President in 1937After a term in the state House he won a seat in the state Senate, and his fellow senators chose him as president for the 1937 session.
- From 1,787 to 5,861Freeport had 1,787 residents in 2010 and 5,861 in 2020, which places it among Florida's fastest growing cities. Hammock Bay, a large cluster of new neighborhoods, brought in about two thousand of those newcomers, and many residents work at Eglin Air Force Base.
- Fishing the calmer bayChoctawhatchee Bay has gentler water than the Gulf of Mexico beyond it.
