About Frenchtown, New Jersey
In 1757, three owners began laying out streets at Calvin's Ferry. They planned to call it Alexandria, for William Alexander, Lord Stirling. In 1794 the land passed to Paul Henri Mallet-Prevost, a Swiss refugee from the French Revolution. He and other settlers spoke French, so people began calling the place Frenchtown.
- The railroad and mill eraThe Belvidere Delaware Railroad arrived in 1853 and brought new growth. Steam-powered industry spread, and by the 1860s water-powered mills were turning into larger factories.
