About Galen, New York

Galen is a town of 4,415 people in Wayne County, on the Erie Canal west of Syracuse. After the American Revolution, New York paid its soldiers with land in the Central New York Military Tract, and the part that became Galen was reserved for the army's physicians and surgeons. That is why the town carries the name of Galen, the great physician of the ancient world.

Settlers arrived around 1800 and made their first homes near Marengo, in the southwest corner. Galen was split off from the Town of Junius, then in Seneca County, in 1812. It joined Wayne County in 1823, and a year later it gave up part of its land to create the Town of Savannah.

  • A French trading postLong before the town existed, and before the French and Indian War, the French kept a block house and trading post near the site of Clyde. Once settlers came, glassmaking grew into one of the most important industries of Galen's early years.
  • The Clyde Lock of 1841Lock 53 of the Enlarged Erie Canal, also called the Clyde Lock, opened in 1841 with a single chamber and was doubled in 1874. It raised boats 4.63 feet heading west. Its remains still stand just west of the Village of Clyde, near where Route 31 meets Old Route 31, on private land.
  • Lock 26 from about 1912When the canal was rebuilt, its route through Galen changed and stretches of the original Erie Canal were left behind. The hamlet of Lockpit, first known as Meadville, sits along that old route. The newer Lock 26, built around 1912 at the end of Lock Road southeast of Clyde, lifts boats 6 feet to the west. Galen lies within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
