About Lyons, New York

Lyons is a town of 5,679 people in Wayne County, New York, and it serves as the county seat. Its land was once part of the Pulteney Estate, and settlers began arriving around 1789, when people knew the area as The Forks. The town took its name from Lyon, France, and it was carved out of Sodus in 1811.

Canal crews had brought the Erie Canal as far as Lyons by 1821. Four years later, in 1825, the town lost part of its land when the Town of Arcadia was formed. The hamlet of Lyons, once an incorporated village, sits on the canal where Routes 14 and 31 cross.

  • Hotchkiss oil since 1841H.G. Hotchkiss brought his essential oil company to Lyons in 1841. The business grew into one of the most important parts of the town's economy.
  • The Poorhouse Lock of 1842Lock 56 of the enlarged Erie Canal, which locals also called the Poorhouse Lock, was built in 1842 with two chambers. It raised boats 10.12 feet on their way west. The canal stopped using it around 1911, and its remains still stand along Dry Dock Road, west of Lyons off Route 31.
  • Lock 28A and the dry docksAround 1913 the canal gained Lock 28A, just west of the Dry Dock Road bridge, raising westbound boats 19.5 feet. The New York State Canal Corporation runs the dry docks beside it, and the town sits within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
