About Garden City, Michigan

Garden City is a city of 27,380 people in Wayne County, about 15 miles west of downtown Detroit. The first person to own land here was Marcus Swift of Palmyra, New York, who bought the northwest quarter of Section 11 from the federal government on May 10, 1825, when the area belonged to Nankin Township. In October 1835 John Lathers received 160 acres in a transfer from Andrew Jackson, and the city's origins trace back to that property.

The town was laid out on the English garden city idea of the 19th century. Most home sites were 1-acre plots, so each family had room to grow its own fruit and vegetables. Later owners split many of those lots, and some are now just 40 by 135 feet. In June 1927 Garden City became a village inside Nankin Township, with Arnold Folker as its first village president, and six years later it became a city.

  • The first Kmart, 1962The very first Kmart store opened in Garden City in 1962. It stayed in business until early 2017, and the building has since been torn down.
  • Little Caesars began hereThe first Little Caesars opened in May 1959 at 32594 Cherry Hill Road and served customers until October 2018. Garden City also had the first McDonald's in Michigan where people could sit down and eat inside.
  • The Folker BuildingGarden City's first city hall was the Folker Building, a gray stone building where Ford Road meets Middlebelt Road, on the southeast side of the crossing that people think of as downtown. Orin Jewelers and other shops moved in later, after the city built a new city hall on Middlebelt Road between Ford and Warren Roads.
  • Henry Ford's honeymoon cottageHenry Ford and his wife, Clara Jane Bryant, spent their honeymoon in a cottage in Dearborn. In 1952 the cottage was moved to Garden City.
