About Redford, Michigan
Redford is a charter township of 49,504 people in Wayne County, on the western border of Detroit. Its land was first part of Bucklin Township, which the governor organized in 1827. On October 29, 1829, Bucklin was split along what is now Inkster Road, and the eastern half was named Pekin, during a wave of interest in China.
On March 21, 1833, Pekin was renamed Redford, and on April 1 of that year Dearborn Township was created out of its southern part. The new name came from the River Rouge, where Native people and early European settlers crossed the water at a ford. Since rouge is the French word for red, the crossing on the Rouge became the red ford.
“The name of Pekin was changed to Redford in 1833, but the next year the township of Canton was created, the council being apparently determined to have two Chinese names.”
- Beech, or Fishers StationAlbert Fisher became the first postmaster when the village of Beech opened a post office on December 4, 1871, and the village was platted in 1872. Fisher kept the general store, and Dunning, Fisher & Rhode operated a sawmill, so the place was also known as Fisher, or as Fishers Station after its railroad depot. Detroit later took over the post office, which closed on September 17, 1906, but Beech Daly Road still carries the name.
- Charter status in 1926Redford once stretched east all the way to Greenfield Road. In the 1920s Detroit annexed the township's eastern sections, and the annexations stopped only in 1926, when the Michigan legislature gave Redford charter status.
- A library that began on wheelsBy the 1950s it had moved into a small storefront on Beech-Daly Road, and in 1962 it got a building of its own. On August 23, 2004, a 65,000-square-foot library opened on West Six Mile Road, paid for by an $8.5 million community bond.
- A Supreme Court case in 2012Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School stands in Redford. A dispute over how it hired staff reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where its case against the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was decided in 2012.
