About Gause, Texas

Gause is a community of 275 people in eastern Milam County, 16 miles southeast of Cameron. It takes its name from William J. Gause, a settler who arrived in 1872 and built his house with lumber brought in by wagon from Montgomery. A post office opened in 1874, and two years later residents put up a schoolhouse that served as their church as well.

By 1884 about 300 people lived here, with two steam cotton gins and two churches, and farmers from across the county sent corn, cotton and cottonseed oil out from Gause. The town peaked at about 1,000 people around 1915. Its bank closed in 1927 after 17 years, and as stores shut and automobiles carried trade elsewhere, the count fell from 750 in the 1940s to 278 by the 1960s. Families who worked at nearby industrial plants brought it back to 400 residents and eight businesses in 1990.

  • Railroad land in 1873A year after he settled here, William J. Gause gave the International-Great Northern Railroad a right-of-way and 100 acres of his land. The tracks brought the growth that turned his homestead into a town, and Gause became a shipping point for Milam County farms.
  • Milam County's first school districtThe Gause Independent School District, founded in 1905, was the first independent school district in Milam County. It still runs one campus, which serves about 150 children from prekindergarten through grade eight.
  • Sugarloaf MountainThe highest point in Milam County rises near Gause. The Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma bought the 60-acre Sugarloaf property from private owners because the mountain is sacred to the Tonkawa, and the land is set to become part of a historical park.
