About Gerton, North Carolina
In 1883, the community's post office opened as Pump. The name came from a pump that brought water off Bearwallow Mountain. In 1902, a new cancelling stamp misspelled it as Rump. Embarrassed residents renamed the town for Gertrude Freeman, a beloved teacher. She was shy, so they used a short form of her name: Gerton.
A drovers' road first linked the area to Asheville in 1798. Drovers used it to move livestock in and out of the Blue Ridge Mountains to market. Most of the animals were flocks of turkeys and herds of hogs, along with geese and cattle.
