About Gillette, New Jersey

Gillette is an unincorporated community of 2,956 people in Long Hill Township, Morris County, and the Passaic River forms its southern border. In 1869 the Passaic Valley and Peapack Railroad bought rights of way through the valley so it could run trains from Summit to Bernardsville. The company built the factory village of Stirling along the new line, and a little farther east it opened a second station on land the Cornish family farmed.

  • Named for an engineer's fiancéeThe railroad's engineer was engaged to Rachel Gillette Cornish, a member of the family whose farmland held the new station. He named the stop Gillette in her honor, and the community that grew around it kept the name.
  • Farm country by the tracksThe railroad brought new immigrant families to Stirling, its factory village just to the west. Gillette did not follow that path. It remained rural into the early twentieth century, and it kept a post office and a general store of its own.
  • Two villages and a hillLong Hill, which gives the township its name, rises to 450 feet, about 200 feet above the valleys on either side. It separates the old settlement of Gillette, in the south, from Meyersville, in the north.
  • A park for a Navy SEALIn 2013 the community gave its Riverside Park a new name, Matthew G. Kantor Memorial Park. Kantor was a Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan in 2012, and the park now carries his name in his memory.
