About Millington, New Jersey
Millington is a community of 3,038 people in Long Hill Township, Morris County, where the Passaic River forms the line with Somerset County. European settlers reached this ground in the 1730s. They cleared farms, put up mills along the Passaic and made use of the Great Swamp, whose national wildlife refuge still runs along Millington's northern side.
The village grew into a place with its own school, its own railroad stop and, from 1911, its own lender. Millington Building and Loan opened that year, and over time it became Millington Savings Bank, with branches across the area.
- Fireworks since 1890Augustine Santore learned his craft as an apprentice to a master fireworker back in Italy. After coming to the United States, he started a fireworks plant in Millington in 1890. Four generations of Santores carried the business on as Garden State Fireworks. It took the World Fireworks Championships in Monte Carlo two years running, in 1982 and 1983, and it lit the sky for the Statue of Liberty's centennial in 1986.
- The schoolhouse that became town hallThe village's first school was already standing in 1820, and it may be older than that. A fire damaged it in 1933, and the building was repaired and made larger. It then housed the township's municipal offices until 2003. Today it is known as the Millington Schoolhouse, and it is on the National Register.
- A depot built in 1901The West Line Railroad pushed its tracks from Summit to Bernardsville starting in 1870, and Millington got its station building in 1901. Millington Station still serves riders on NJ Transit's Gladstone Branch, and it joined the National Register on June 22, 1984.
- The Clover Hill case of 1966The Clover Hill Swimming Club in Millington turned away Robert F. Goldsboro, an African American veterinarian, and he sued, saying he was refused because of his race. The club argued that as a private club it could choose its own members. It lost, appealed, and lost again in 1966 when the Supreme Court of New Jersey sided with Goldsboro.
