About Warren, New Jersey
Warren is a township of 15,923 people in Somerset County, where the county meets Morris and Union counties along the Passaic River. The Lenape lived on this land before European farmers began settling it in the 1720s. On March 5, 1806, the New Jersey Legislature created the township from parts of Bernards and Bridgewater townships.
The new township took the name of General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War patriot who died at Bunker Hill. Its southeastern half lay close to a railroad and held most of its people, so on April 2, 1872, that half split away as North Plainfield Township, which is now Green Brook Township. As early as 1900, wealthy New Yorkers were coming to Warren to get away from the city, and the township marked its 200th anniversary in 2006.
- Youngest mayor in 1939Frank Salvato first won a seat on the Township Committee in 1938, and the next year he became mayor, the youngest Warren has had. He stayed in local government for decades. Voters re-elected him in 2008, and he was still on the committee when he died in 2011 at the age of 98.
- Landmarks in township handsIn 1971 Warren set up a Historical Sites Committee, with members appointed by the governing body to care for historic places the township owns. Its charges include the Mount Bethel Baptist Meetinghouse, the Kirch-Ford House, the Baker-Duderstadt Farm and two small family cemeteries. The meetinghouse and the Kirch-Ford House are both on the National Register.
- A dairy farm turned arboretumIn 2001 the township bought the old Wagner Dairy Farm. Its 92.6 acres became the Wagner Farm Arboretum.
- Split by a mountain ridgeThe Second Watchung Mountain runs east to west through Warren. North of it the land falls toward the Passaic and Dead rivers, and south of it lies the Washington Valley, where the East Branch of the Middle Brook flows between the First and Second Watchung ridges. Near the Bridgewater line the ridge shows a steep cliff at the abandoned Dock Watch Quarry.
