About Stirling, New Jersey

Stirling is a community of 2,555 people in Long Hill Township, Morris County. The Passaic River runs along its southern edge, with Somerset County on the far bank. Settlers came here in 1740, but the village really grew only after the Civil War, when the West Line railroad opened up the Passaic Valley and homes and factories gathered near the tracks.

Fred Simpson Winston bought about 500 acres here to develop, and he chose the name. He picked Stirling to honor William Alexander, the Revolutionary War general called Lord Stirling. Alexander had held a 1,000 acre tract on both banks of the Passaic, and his house stood on the Somerset County side.

  • Lord Stirling's furnaceWilliam Alexander, the man the village is named for, served the United States as a major general. His Hibernia Furnace, also in Morris County, was put to work for the Continental cause, casting military stores.
  • An Assyrian school in 1899Immigrants from Diyarbakır, Turkey, founded the Assyrian National School Association in Stirling in 1899.
  • A Blue Ribbon schoolSt. Vincent de Paul School, a Catholic school under the Diocese of Paterson, was honored in 2012 when it received a Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence. Falling enrollment and money troubles closed it in June 2016. Central Middle School, one of four schools in the Long Hill Township system, still teaches grades 6 to 8 in Stirling.
  • On the Gladstone BranchThe village grew up around the railroad after the Civil War. Its train station still serves riders on New Jersey Transit's Gladstone Branch of the Morristown Line.
