About Gloversville, New York
Gloversville is a city of 15,131 people in Fulton County, in the Mohawk Valley at the edge of the Adirondack foothills. Its land was once part of the Kingsborough Tract, which England granted to Sir William Johnson because he kept the Six Nations Iroquois on the English side during the French and Indian War. Scottish Highlanders farmed the tract, but after the Revolution some of them followed Johnson's son to Canada, and Puritans from New England moved into the houses and cleared fields they left behind.
The settlement was nicknamed Stump City for all the trees its settlers had cut, and when a post office opened in 1828 the name became Gloversville. Nearby hemlock forests supplied bark for tanning hides, so by 1852 the village of 1,318 people already had 40 small glove and mitten factories around the Four Corners of Main and Fulton Streets. Gloversville incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a city in 1890, by which time it had grown from 4,000 people in 1877 to 13,864.
“233 families and about 1,400 souls. Of the families, 191 are of English descent, twenty-three Scot, fourteen Dutch, and five Irish.”
- 90% of America's glovesFrom 1890 to 1950, nine of every ten gloves sold in the United States came from Gloversville. Glovemaking moved from homes into factories, though home workers still sewed leather cut at the plants, and tanneries and glove shops came to employ nearly 80% of area residents. At the peak, the city and neighboring Johnstown held over 200 makers. The trade declined after the 1950s, and the population, which peaked at 23,634 in 1950, fell for decades.
- Bullet cars in 1932The Fonda, Johnstown and Gloversville Railroad was an electric interurban line running through Johnstown and Amsterdam to the New York Central station in downtown Schenectady. In 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression, it bought new bullet cars to win back business. The line stayed busy until 1936.
- Samuel Goldwyn sold gloves hereSamuel Goldwyn left Poland in 1899 and reached Gloversville by way of England and Canada. Relatives in Hamburg had already taught him glovemaking, and in Gloversville he worked as a glove maker and as a commissioned salesman for the Elite Glove Company.
- A hospital named for a fatherLucius Littauer, born in Gloversville, served five terms in Congress and was the first football coach at Harvard. In 1891 he gave the founding donation for Nathan Littauer Hospital, named in honor of his father.
- Records pressed from 1931Brunswick Radio Corporation opened a record pressing plant in Gloversville in 1931. American Decca Records owned it by 1953, Decca became MCA Records in 1973, and in 1999 the label joined the PolyGram family to form Universal Music. The plant pressed records until 2005.
