About Town of Johnstown, Fulton County, New York: Home, Street by Street

Johnstown was founded by William Johnson, a British army officer and colonial official. By 1762 he had built a baronial hall here. In 1772 he paid part of the cost of a courthouse and jail, and the settlement grew. After the Revolution, his family lost everything for siding with Britain.
