About Goodlettsville, Tennessee

Goodlettsville is a city of 17,789 people in the Nashville metropolitan area. Its northern half lies in Sumner County and its southern half in Davidson County. Kasper Mansker, a long hunter said to have been born on an immigrant ship, started exploring Kentucky and Tennessee in 1769. A trip in 1772 showed him the land of present Sumner and Davidson Counties. In the winter of 1779 to 1780, a winter remembered for bitter cold, he built a fortified station here beside a salt lick and the creek that now bears his name.

The town later took its name from A. G. Goodlett, who became pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1848 and served until 1853. Goodlettsville became an incorporated city in 1958, when just over 3,000 people lived there. Nashville merged with the Davidson County government in 1963, but Goodlettsville chose to keep its own government.

“The Goodlettsville Lamb and Wool Club showed that cooperation was the best way to combat the pressures from buyers of farm products.”
