About Gordon Heights, New York

Gordon Heights is a hamlet of 3,981 people in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, on Long Island. In the early 1920s developer Louis Fife went into the Black neighborhoods of Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx with an offer of land on Long Island and the hope of a better life there.

Fife had bought the property from a man everyone called "Pop" Gordon, who once owned most of the land, and the new community was named for him. Lots sold for as little as $1 down and $10 a month, and families began moving out from the city in 1927. They put up houses and worked small farms they called homesteads, in what was then a quiet rural setting.

  • Hotels with famous guestsAs the community grew, residents built churches, community centers and civic groups. Gordon Heights also had its own hotels and restaurants, and they brought well-known African American leaders and entertainers out to this corner of Long Island.
  • Neighbors organized in 1945Residents formed a civic association to look after the needs of the area. It became the Gordon Heights Progressive Association, founded in 1945, and the Gordon Heights Fire Department later grew up under that group's sponsorship.
