About the Town of Goshen, New York
Goshen is the seat of Orange County. In 1940 it was known as the Epsom Downs of light harness racing. Each July and August, horse lovers jammed the roads, and rooms in town were hard to find. Many visitors ate at lunch counters clustered near the tracks.
On July 22, 1822, Goshen raised a monument to the men killed at the Battle of Minisink. Their remains were gathered from the battlefield and buried together beneath it. Exactly forty years later, a grander monument was dedicated, paid for by the will of Dr. Merritt H. Cash.
- How the town got its nameGoshen takes its name from the Land of Goshen in the Bible. European settlers arrived around 1714, and the town was formally established in 1788.
