About Grapeville, Pennsylvania
Geologists called the natural gas wells of the Grapeville and Murrysville districts the greatest on the globe. By 1890, the wells had flowed for over ten years with no sign of failure. Their gas supplied Pittsburgh and towns more than thirty miles away. The cheap gas brought steel, iron and glass works to the county.
In 1925, the Jeannette Brick and Stone Company worked an important shale quarry at Grapeville Station. Steam shovels dug the Lindsey shale and the clay soil above it at the same time. Mixed and burned, they made a good grade of common red brick.
