About Grayson, Georgia

Grayson is a city of 4,730 people in Gwinnett County, five miles down State Route 20 from Lawrenceville, the county seat. The town's first name was Trip, and in 1901 John Ellery Jacobs, its postmaster and a civic leader, wrote to the post office department to ask that Trip be renamed Berkley.

On December 6, 1901, the Georgia General Assembly passed an act that incorporated the town and changed its name. Jacobs soon learned that Georgia already had a Berkley, so he offered Graymount, chosen for the clear view of Stone Mountain, but another town held that name too. His third choice, Grayson, is the name the city has carried ever since.
