About Great Notch, New Jersey

Great Notch is a community of 3,289 people in the eastern part of Little Falls, in Passaic County. It takes its name from a gap in the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains, a major opening in the cliff wall where Route 46 now runs.

That opening was one of the few easy ways through the mountain wall, and armies and settlers used it during the Revolution. Today the Great Notch Fire Company and some of the Montclair State University campus sit inside the community.

  • Guarding the Notch in 1780Because the gap let travelers cross the mountains, patrolling Continental troops moved through it during the Revolutionary War. In October 1780, George Washington stationed Major Parr's corps at the Notch. Later orders sent Lafayette's light infantry to camp near the Notch and the Cranetown gap, to protect the right side of the army.
  • A stone farmhouse from 1785In 1775 members of the Speer family left Passaic and Paterson and crossed the mountains by way of the Great Notch, settling in the valley below Little Falls. About 1785 Reynier Speer built a small stone farmhouse there. Historians count the Reynier Speer House among the earliest Dutch colonial farmhouses documented in the Montclair and Little Falls area, and it is on the National Register.
  • The last train in 2010Great Notch once had its own stop on the railroad. By the end, fewer than 10 passengers boarded there on a typical weekday, so NJ Transit stopped serving the Great Notch station in January 2010.
