About Upper Montclair, New Jersey
Upper Montclair is a neighborhood and census-designated place of 13,146 people in the northern part of Montclair, in Essex County. The area began early in the 18th century as a farming settlement called Speertown, after John Speer, a Dutch settler, and it stayed a quiet country hamlet through most of that century. In 1868 the township of Montclair, Upper Montclair included, was formed from part of Bloomfield Township. The neighborhood has its own ZIP Code, 07043, which may be why even some Montclair residents think it is a separate town.
- Trolleys on Valley RoadFrom 1889 to 1928, an electric trolley line ran along Valley Road. Trains on New Jersey Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line still stop at three stations in the neighborhood: Upper Montclair, Mountain Avenue and Montclair Heights. The historic Upper Montclair station building now holds the Montclair Station Restaurant & Bar.
- Buzz Aldrin Middle SchoolBuzz Aldrin grew up in Montclair and became the second man to walk on the Moon. In September 2016 the neighborhood's Mt. Hebron Middle School was renamed Buzz Aldrin Middle School in his honor.
- Iris gardens and nature reservesUpper Montclair holds the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, the Bonsal Nature Reserve, Anderson Park, Yantacaw Brook Park and Mountainside Park, along with parts of Mills Reservation and Brookdale Park. Its Mountainside Public Pool is the largest of Montclair's three public pools.
