About Verona, New Jersey
Verona is a township of 14,572 people in Essex County. It sits in the valley between the First and Second Watchung Mountains, where the Peckman River runs down toward the Passaic at Little Falls. In 1702 settlers from Newark bought a large tract from the Lenape for a few hundred dollars' worth of goods. The Lenape called it Horseneck because its outline looked like a horse's head and neck. After the Revolutionary War the tract became Caldwell Township, named for the pastor James Caldwell, who had helped push the British out.
In the 19th century this end of the township was known as Vernon Valley. When residents applied for a post office, the name was turned down because Sussex County already used it, so they chose Verona, after the city in Italy. Between 1798 and 1892, Verona quarreled with Caldwell over schools, churches, water and road repair money. On February 17, 1892, Verona's citizens voted to leave Caldwell and form Verona Township.
- A borough by 224 to 77Verona grew faster than the rest of the township and needed a water system, so in 1902 the two halves agreed to split. Residents also wanted distance from the Overbrook County Insane Asylum, the Newark City Home reform school and farming Cedar Grove. The legislature took two sessions to approve the borough, on April 18, 1907, and voters passed it 224 to 77 on April 30. In 1908 the rest of the township took the name Cedar Grove.
- Flags that went to the MoonAnnin & Co., the oldest and biggest flag company in the world, made flags in Verona from 1916 to 2013. The factory sewed 186 small stick flags that flew to the Moon aboard the Apollo 11 lunar lander and came home as keepsakes of the first landing. At the time, every star section of Annin's flags was made here. The plant was later sold and turned into apartments, which opened in 2018.
- A township again in 1981In 1981 Verona voters made the borough a township, one of seven Essex County towns to do so that year. Federal revenue sharing gave townships more aid for each resident. In 1976 the borough had received $213,000, while Cedar Grove Township, a town of about the same size, got $1.24 million.
- A park by Central Park's designerVerona Park ranks fifth in size among the county's parks, and it came from the same designer who planned New York's Central Park. Kip's Castle Park, the county system's newest, keeps a mansion built in the style of a castle, with a big carriage house, on 10.5 acres of grounds.
