About Valley Cottage, New York
Valley Cottage is a hamlet of 9,038 people in the town of Clarkstown, in Rockland County. Its first known resident was John Ryder, who bought his land on June 8, 1753, from Peter Geslar, one of a group of German settlers. Ryder's big farm took in most of what later became the local school district. In the years of the Revolution, the crossroads here went by the name Storm's Corner.
On March 20, 1873, Valley Cottage opened a post office of its own, and James A. Green became its first postmaster. In 1883 the New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railroad laid its tracks through Clarkstown and built a station on the old Ryder tract. Part of that land was still owned by the Ryder family in 1886.
- A cottage or a horseOne story says the residents met in the school room before the station opened and picked the name for the house that stood closest to it, the cottage in the valley. Another story says the name came from Cottage Maid, a well-known trotting horse. The horse belonged to Ed Green, who owned the ground under the station and the Marcus store.
- The Icehouse of New York CityThe Knickerbocker Ice Company was founded in 1831 to cut ice from Rockland Lake, prized for its clean, pure ice. By 1834 it had 75 ice barges, a dozen steamboats and about 3,000 workers. Inclined railroad cars carried the blocks down the mountain to Hudson barges bound for New York City. Ice House No. 3 kept more than 40,000 tons behind walls packed with sawdust. It burned in 1926; its surviving walls are now a Clarkstown historic site.
- Storms Tavern, built in 1765This sandstone and frame house stands where Casper Hill Road meets Storms Road, a key crossing before and during the Revolution. For many years it was the first stop for the stagecoach heading north, and the stone block where riders stepped down is still there. A local legend says George Washington stopped here. About fifty years later the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Its owner, Tilcon New York Inc, gave the tavern to Clarkstown in October 2025.
- Tolstoy's daughter, from 1939Alexandra Tolstoy, the youngest daughter of Leo Tolstoy, founded the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage in 1939 and lived here in her later years. Herbert Hoover was its first honorary chairman, from 1939 to 1964, and the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and the aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky served on its board. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn spent many of his first summer months in America here after he emigrated.
