About Bardonia, New York
Bardonia is a hamlet of 4,249 people in the town of Clarkstown, Rockland County. Its name honors three brothers from Bavaria, John Bardon and the twins Phillip and Conrad, who came in 1849 and opened several businesses here. A railroad station opened in 1875 on a branch line to New City run by the New Jersey and New York Railroad, and the settlement around it became known as Bardon's Station.
In 1884 the Rev. David Cole published a history of Rockland County. It counted thirty-three families in the hamlet, one hundred thirty-seven people in all. John Bardon's brick country store sold goods and also served as the waiting room for the train, and Charles Ross owned the local hotel. Many of the residents were German, and almost every family owned its own home.
- Where Brewery Road got its nameBardon's Station had a brewery in 1884, and the nearby road still carries the name Brewery Road. A man named H. Schultz ran a cider mill in the hamlet at the same time.
- Trains until 1939The New City line later became part of the Erie Railroad system. Service ended in 1939, and the tracks were taken up soon after. The old Bardonia station house stood near the corner of Bardonia Road and Route 304 until 2014, when it was torn down to make room for a CVS.
- Albertus Magnus High SchoolThe private Catholic Albertus Magnus High School stands in Bardonia. Younger children attend Bardonia Elementary School, part of the Clarkstown Central School District.
