About Glen Ridge, New Jersey
Glen Ridge is a borough of 7,802 people in Essex County, set on a ridge along the eastern face of First Mountain in the Watchungs. When Bloomfield was formed in 1812, this section on the hill was mostly farms and woods. Down in the glen along Toney's Brook, though, three water-powered mills turned out lumber, calico, pasteboard boxes and brass fittings for most of the nineteenth century, near a copper mine and a sandstone quarry.
Residents on the hill grew frustrated with the Bloomfield township council, because their roads stayed unpaved, they had no water or sewer lines, and the nearest schools were miles off. They marked the edges of a 1.45-square-mile area and held a vote on February 12, 1895, and leaving Bloomfield won by 23 votes. The next day the New Jersey Legislature incorporated Glen Ridge as a borough, and Robert Rudd became its first mayor.
- Trains through the glenThe Newark and Bloomfield Railroad reached the area in 1856, and its trains stopped every day at Moffett's Mill. In 1860 the line built a platform at Prospect Street, called Ridgewood Station. The New York and Greenwood Lake Railway opened in 1872 with a single track and a stop at Ridgewood Avenue, and a new Ridgewood Station went up in 1887.
- Gas lamps on the streetsSoon after the borough formed, architects proposed gas lamps for its streetlights, and they became the town's signature. Around World War II, Glen Ridge took in lamps thrown out elsewhere, many by New York City, repaired them and put them up here. On streets lit by gas, electric lines run behind the houses instead of on poles, and slate sidewalks line many blocks. The local historical society named its quarterly newsletter The Gaslamp.
- A hospital and a clubMountainside Hospital was founded here in 1891 and grew to more than 300 beds. The Glen Ridge Country Club followed in 1894, which makes it one of the oldest clubs in New Jersey.
- New Jersey's first zoning lawIn 1924 Glen Ridge became the first town in the state to adopt a zoning ordinance, setting rules for how its land could be used.
- Born here in 1930Buzz Aldrin was born at Mountainside Hospital in 1930, while his family lived next door in Montclair. He flew on Gemini 12 in 1966, and in 1969 he was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 11, walking on the Moon right after Neil Armstrong.
