About Ampere North, New Jersey
Ampere North is a community of 5,132 people in Bloomfield Township, Essex County. It sits in the township's southern corner. Watsessing lies to the north and Silver Lake to the northeast. East Orange borders it on the southwest, and Newark on the southeast.
Ampere Parkway runs through the middle of the community. The street starts at Bloomfield Avenue and heads south into the Ampere neighborhood of East Orange. The Ampere name goes back to the Crocker-Wheeler Electric Company, which gave that name to the site of its new plant near Newark in 1893.
- Named Ampere in 1893In April 1893 The Electrical Age wrote about the Crocker-Wheeler Electric Company. The firm did a large business building dynamos and motors, and it had just opened new and larger works in a suburb of Newark. It named the place Ampere. The word was already the name of a unit of electricity, which honors a French physicist.
- A depot at the factory gateA railway depot opened for the company on the Montclair branch, across from the entrance to the new works. The station took the same name, Ampere.
- Hundreds of workers moved inHundreds of the company's workers were settling near the plant in 1893. The Electrical Age expected the place to become one of the busiest factory towns in New Jersey. It said the town would be known for electric machines the way Trenton was known for pottery.
- On the census map since 2020The Census Bureau first listed Ampere North as a census-designated place for the 2020 count. That count found 5,132 people living here.
