About Silver Lake, New Jersey

Silver Lake is a community of 4,730 people in Essex County, spread across parts of Belleville, Newark and Bloomfield. It is named for a lake that no longer exists. Jasper Crane created that lake in 1730 by building a dam, and the water stood for more than 150 years before it drained away.

  • Jasper Crane's dam of 1730Crane put up his dam in 1730 on the ground where St. Anthony's Church stands today. The water that backed up behind it formed a lake about 300 feet across and half a mile long, and people called it Silver Lake.
  • The storm of July 30, 1889A storm on July 30, 1889, sent floods that broke Crane's dam, and the lake emptied out. By the 1920s nothing of the old lake could be seen, but the neighborhood still carries its name.
  • St. Anthony's Feast since 1995St. Anthony of Padua Church, built on the site of the old dam, has long served the Silver Lake community and marked its 120th anniversary in 2022. Since 1995 the parish has held the Feast of St. Anthony every year, and it has become a fixture of neighborhood life.
