About Watsessing, New Jersey

Watsessing is a neighborhood of 8,078 people in Bloomfield Township, Essex County, in the valley of the Second River, which is also called the Watsessing River. Papers from the 1600s and 1700s gave this plain the name Watsesson or Wardsesson, a Native word that the settlers wrote down as closely to its sound as they could. A 1939 state guide translates it as crooked place.

At first the whole township carried that name. In 1796 a town meeting renamed it Bloomfield in honor of Joseph Bloomfield, a general in the Revolution who later served as governor from 1801 to 1812. The old name lasted in this southern part of town, where it came to be spelled Watsessing.

  • Wilderness, farms, then factoriesThe 1940 history of the Dod family traced how this plain changed over the centuries. It began as wilderness and was cleared for farms, and by 1940 the farms were gone too, replaced by factories such as the General Electric works. The mill building of Interstate Hosiery Mills, Inc., part of that factory era, is on the National Register.
  • A park on the Second RiverEssex County gave the old name to Watsessing Park, which sits at the center of the community in the Second River valley. The Garden State Parkway passes along the park's southeast side, with an exit at 148.
  • A station with the old nameThe Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad also named a station here Watsessing, which helped keep the word in daily use. Today NJ Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line stops twice in the community, at Watsessing Avenue and at Bloomfield Station, which is on the National Register.
