About Green Cove Springs, Florida

Green Cove Springs is a city of 9,786 people and the seat of Clay County, on the St. Johns River. It takes its name from a spring beside a curve in the river, where the trees stay green through every season. Native Americans were drawn to the warm mineral water more than 7,000 years ago, and in 1816 Spain granted George J. F. Clarke land here so he could put up a sawmill.

Locals knew the spring as the "Original Fountain of Youth," and in the 1800s more than a dozen hotels rose around it for visitors. That trade nearly vanished late in the century, when Henry Flagler's railroad carried tourists farther south and the Great Freeze of 1895 wiped out the citrus. Automobiles brought visitors back in the 1920s, until the Great Depression ended the boom.

  • A chapel for winter guestsIn 1878 a Boston woman who spent her winters in Green Cove Springs sent the bishop a letter, hoping he would give the season's visitors a chapel. Winter guests and year-round residents together raised more than $1,000, and St. Mary's Episcopal Church held its first service on March 10, 1879.
  • Courthouse of 1889Clay County built its two-story brick courthouse on Walnut Street in 1889, and the county's courts used it until 1973. Today it shares the county's Historic Triangle with the old jail, a railroad depot display and the Clay County History Museum.
  • A Navy base and 500 shipsThe Navy opened Naval Air Station Lee Field on September 11, 1940, honoring Ensign Benjamin Lee, killed in a crash in England during World War I. Renamed Naval Air Station Green Cove Springs in 1943, it had four 5,000-foot runways, and Ed McMahon learned to fly for the Marine Corps there in early 1945. After the war, about 500 reserve vessels lay at 13 river piers until it closed in 1960.
  • Mama and Papa GusFrank and Agnes Gustafson started a dairy farm here in 1908. It grew to nearly 10,000 acres beside the city limits, ranking among the biggest private dairy farms in the Southeastern United States. The couple's pictures, along with their first cow, Buttercup, still appear on every Gustafson's carton.
  • Merrill Lynch began hereCharles E. Merrill, born in Green Cove Springs in 1885, lived here as a young boy. Years later his son James Merrill, a poet, described the town's spring in his poem "Two From Florida."
