About Greenfield, New York

Greenfield is a town of 8,004 people in Saratoga County, northwest of Saratoga Springs in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Settlers arrived around 1786, and in 1793 Greenfield was created from pieces of Milton and Saratoga. It took its name from Greenfield, New Hampshire.

The new town lost ground the very next year. In 1794 it gave up land to help create three new towns: Day, Corinth and Hadley. Even so, Greenfield remains the largest town in the county by area, covering 67.7 square miles, and both the Palmertown and Kayaderosseras ranges cross it.

  • Porter Corners since 1787James Vail and Benjamin Clinch were among the first to settle this crossroads in 1787. Asahel Porter, born in Massachusetts in 1768, reached Greenfield in 1793 or 1794 and moved here from St. John's Corners some years after 1796. He prospered, served as sheriff and sat in the State Assembly, so the hamlet took his name. Over time it had a bank, a jail, a hotel, a store, two churches, grist mills, a saw mill and a carriage shop.
  • Mom and Pop'sThe store building in Porter Corners dates from the late 1800s. Locals still call it Mom and Pop's, after the business of that name that ran there for many decades until recently. The hamlet also keeps a Methodist church, a post office, a fire department and a town park.
  • Mount Pleasant, now emptyIn the town's northwest corner, north of Lake Desolation, Mount Pleasant was once the most populous settlement in Greenfield. Today the place is abandoned.
  • Middle Grove was JamesvilleThe hamlet of Middle Grove, in the southwestern part of town, went by the name Jamesville in its early years.
