About Saratoga Springs, New York

Saratoga Springs is a city of 28,491 people in Saratoga County, and it takes its name from the mineral springs that rise along the Saratoga Fault. The Mohawk hunted here and used the springs for centuries. In 1767 Native American friends led William Johnson, the British superintendent of Indian affairs, to the water to treat his war wounds. A settler built the first permanent home around 1776, and Gideon Putnam followed with the first hotel for travelers, then laid out roads and gave land for public spaces.

In 1819 the settlement was set off from the western part of the Town of Saratoga. Its main village incorporated in 1826, and the whole area became a city in 1915. The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad arrived in 1832 and carried thousands of visitors to the springs and the resort hotels built for them, including the Grand Union, which at one time was the biggest hotel anywhere. Saratoga Springs had become one of the country's top upscale resorts by 1870.

  • Racing since 1863Gamblers were already coming to the spas when the Saratoga Race Course opened in 1863. John Morrissey, one of the track's builders, also opened a gambling house called the Club House. James Canfield later bought it and remodeled it after the casinos of Monaco, and guests included Ulysses S. Grant, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Mark Twain. After years of pressure from crusaders like Anthony Comstock, Canfield sold it to the city in 1907, and the city turned it into a museum.
  • Rothstein brings gambling backIn 1917 the gambler Arnold Rothstein bribed local officials and opened the Arrowhead Inn, then added The Brook in 1921. During Prohibition The Brook employed Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Dutch Schultz, and in the early 1930s Lansky opened the Piping Rock Club. Pressure from Governor Dewey in the 1940s and the Kefauver hearings of 1950 ended the town's tolerance of illegal gambling. The Piping Rock burned in 1954 under suspicious circumstances.
  • Saving the springs in 1911Settlers drilled into the springs, and by 1900 there were 203 flowing, some pumped for mineral water and some for carbon dioxide. The pumping for bottling threatened to drain them, so New York limited their use in 1908. In 1911 the state created a reservation, now Spa State Park, and built the Lincoln and Roosevelt bath houses. As of 2019 there were 17 productive springs, and visitors still soak at the Roosevelt bath house.
  • Yaddo, an artists' retreatWall Street financier Spencer Trask and his wife, the author Katrina Trask, founded Yaddo, a 400-acre artists' community, and it opened in 1900. Since then 68 writers who stayed there have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, and Saul Bellow won the Nobel Prize. Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein all worked there as artists in residence.
