About Saratoga, New York
Saratoga is a town of 5,808 people in Saratoga County, set between the Hudson River and Saratoga Lake. Its main village is Schuylerville, which many people call Old Saratoga, and the town also holds a second village, Victory. Settlers raised Fort Saratoga here at the end of the 17th century, and the ground soon lay between British and French colonial forces. In 1745, during King George's War, the French burned the village of Saratoga, the place now called Schuylerville.
The two Battles of Saratoga were fought in 1777 in Stillwater, the next town south. The British army ended up here for the last 10 days of the siege, and the surrender itself happened in Schuylerville. On October 17, 1777, British General John Burgoyne gave up his army to American General Horatio Gates, an event often named as the turning point of the American Revolution.
“the hillside country of the quiet river”
- A Mohawk nameSaratoga comes from a Mohawk word for hunting grounds on both banks of the Hudson. Early Dutch settlers wrote it as Sarachtoge, and another early spelling was Saraghtogo, though no one has proven where the name began.
- A mother town of 1788In 1775 Saratoga was one of three districts of Albany County, with Ballstown and Halfmoon. A 1788 law turned the districts into towns, and the first town of Saratoga took in Easton, Northumberland, Moreau, Wilton, parts of Greenfield and Corinth, and the land of Saratoga Springs. Easton split off in 1789, five more towns left in 1798, a strip went to Malta in 1805, and Saratoga Springs was carved from the west side in 1819.
- Hamlets named for generalsTwo hamlets in the north of the town carry the names of the men who faced each other in 1777. Burgoyne honors the British commander, and Gates honors the American who accepted his surrender.
- Where the surrender is rememberedSaratoga National Historical Park reaches into the town with the Schuyler House, the Saratoga Monument, Victory Woods and the Sword Surrender Site. The battlefield part of the park lies south in Stillwater.
