About Hamilton, Ohio

Hamilton is a city of 63,399 people on the Great Miami River and the county seat of Butler County. It began as Fort Hamilton, which Arthur St. Clair, a general and the Northwest Territory's governor, built in September and October 1791 to supply his troops in the Northwest Indian War. He named it for Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury. Settlers gathered around the fort and platted their village as Fairfield in 1794, and the army left the fort in 1796 after the Treaty of Greenville was signed.

Ohio created Butler County on March 24, 1803, and there was a contest for its seat. Hamilton won because its founder, Israel Ludlow, donated the public square. The first county court met in a tavern that July and then in a two-story building left from the fort, and in 1810 the county put up its first courthouse on the square. Hamilton was reincorporated in 1827 along with Rossville, across the river, and after a split the two joined again in 1854. Hamilton became a city in 1857.

  • Water power from 1845Investors organized the Hamilton Hydraulic in 1842, before any shops stood along its route. A dam about four miles north of town fed river water into canals and reservoirs, and the main canal followed North Fifth Street down to Market Street, then turned west to the river. Water first flowed through it in January 1845, and mills soon followed, among them the Beckett Paper Company, founded in 1848; no paper mill west of the Alleghenies is older.
  • Henry Ford on North FifthAfter World War I the water power of the hydraulic drew Henry Ford to Hamilton. He built a tractor plant at the north end of North Fifth Street, and it soon switched to making auto parts.
  • Lincoln comes to town, 1859Abraham Lincoln reached Hamilton by train on the afternoon of September 17, 1859, to campaign for William Dennison, a fellow Republican running for governor of Ohio. About 1,000 people gathered at South Fourth and Ludlow streets as he spoke from the back of the train about popular sovereignty. During this campaign people first mentioned the little-known Lincoln as a possible candidate for president, and he was elected the next year.
  • The flood of 1913From March 25 to 29, 1913, 9 to 11 inches of rain fell on frozen, soaked ground across the watershed. Downtown flooded 3 to 8 feet, the North End up to 18, and within two hours all four Hamilton bridges were gone. About 200 of the valley's 360 dead were Hamiltonians, and 10,000 of the city's 35,000 people lost homes.
  • Courthouses on Ludlow's squareThe county's first courthouse, a stone building from 1810, had the jail downstairs and the court upstairs. A brick courthouse replaced it in 1817 and added a four-sided clock in 1837. The present Butler County Courthouse, at 101 High Street, was built from 1885 to 1889 and joined the National Register in 1981 for its monumental architecture.
