About Fairfield, Ohio
Fairfield is a city of 44,907 people in southern Butler County, on the east side of the Great Miami River about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. Its land was part of the Symmes Purchase, which Judge John Cleves Symmes bought from the Continental Congress in 1788. Celadon Symmes, the judge's great-nephew, was the first to settle at Symmes Corner, where Pleasant Avenue meets Nilles Road, and that crossroads is now the center of town.
The area stayed mostly farmland into the mid-20th century. Then Hamilton's factories spread south and new homes followed, so in 1954 residents who didn't want Hamilton to annex them pushed to incorporate. An April vote on taking in all of Fairfield Township lost, 1,219 to 831, and organizers tried again with only the precincts that had voted yes. That July they won 738 to 216, and Fairfield became a village in 1955. By 1960 it had passed 5,000 people and became a city.
- Fair Play and its paper millThe hamlet of Fair Play grew up around mills along the Great Miami's eastern shore, including Ohio's first paper mill. Methodists founded a church there around 1843. A flood in the late 1800s destroyed the village, and two of the few things left are the Fair Play School and Miami Chapel Cemetery on River Road. Soldiers of the Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War rest in the cemetery, some in unmarked graves.
- Elisha Morgan's 1817 farmIn 1817 Elisha Morgan purchased 48.6 acres in the township and soon built a farmhouse with a Federal-style front. A Greek Revival wing went on the back in 1858. The house, near Ross Road, is older than most farmhouses in the township and lasted while suburbs filled in around it. It joined the National Register in 1990 as the Morgan-Hueston House and is now a city facility, the Elisha Morgan Mansion.
- Villages on the railroadIn the 1850s the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railway laid its line through the area, and small villages grew beside it. Schencks Station took its name from landowner Aaron Schenck. Stockton, first called Jones Station, served nearby farms with a school, churches, a general store and a blacksmith's shop. Between them, Furmandale was named for Nathaniel Furman, who ran a private school for girls there, though people also called it Schnapstown.
- Fisher Body closes in 1989General Motors' Fisher Body division built a plant at State Route 4 and Symmes Road, close to where Schencks Station had stood. GM later announced the plant would close in the first quarter of 1989. Fairfield lost 2,500 jobs and 28 percent of its income tax revenue, $1.7 million, but new and varied businesses in the 1990s brought the city's finances back into balance.
- Jungle Jim's since 1971Jim Bonaminio opened a produce stand in Fairfield in 1971. The planning commission was reluctant and approved his request only if he would someday put up a permanent store. He did, and Jungle Jim's International Market now sells food and drink from around the world to 50,000 shoppers a week, with yearly sales of nearly $100 million.
