About Hardeeville, South Carolina

Hardeeville is a city of 7,473 people, mostly in Jasper County with a small piece in Beaufort County. Its oldest European roots lie about 2 miles northwest of downtown at Purrysburg, where Jean Pierre Purry brought a party of Swiss Protestants to the banks of the Savannah River in 1732. Disease and the rise of nearby Savannah wore the colony down, and many of its families moved to other Lowcountry spots or upriver to Augusta, Georgia, and Hamburg, though some stayed.

Isaac Hardee, who came from North Carolina, settled the land under today's city in the 19th century. His son, Whyte William Hardee, got a depot and a general store opened on the Charleston and Savannah Railway, and the stop came to be called Hardee's Station. When the town was founded in 1911, it took the name Hardeeville.

  • Swamp logging for ArgentThe Argent Lumber Company made Hardeeville known for timber, and its logging business ranked among the biggest anywhere in the world. Its crews cut trees in the swamps, work far more dangerous than ordinary logging, and narrow-gauge railroads 3 ft wide hauled the logs to a processing yard. There the lumber was loaded onto standard-gauge cars or trucks and shipped across North America.
  • Engine Number 7In 1960 the city received Argent Lumber Company Number 7 as a tribute to what the company meant to the town. H.K. Porter built the steam engine in January 1911 with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement. It is displayed at Hardeeville Veterans Park.
  • The Lowcountry HostAs timber cutting slowly wound down, travelers took its place. U.S. Highway 17 and then Interstate 95 brought motels, restaurants and gas stations, and for many years the town called itself the "Lowcountry Host." Resort growth on Hilton Head Island to the southeast added another interstate exit and drew service workers who made their homes here.
  • From 5 to 45 square milesFacing development pressure along the U.S. Route 278 corridor, the city began annexing big tracts that timber and paper companies had held, growing from 5 square miles in 2000 to over 45 in 2010. Core Communities signed the first development agreement in 2004 and started building Tradition Hilton Head. From 2010 to 2014 Hardeeville grew 53.4 percent, the fastest rate of any South Carolina municipality.
