About Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Hilton Head Island is a town of 37,661 people in Beaufort County, on a barrier island in the South Carolina Lowcountry. It takes its name from Captain William Hilton, who sailed from Barbados on the Adventure in 1663 and marked a headland at the mouth of Port Royal Sound. Planters later raised cotton here, and in 1790 William Elliott II grew the state's first crop of Sea Island Cotton on the island.

In the early 1950s only 300 people lived on the island, and the only ways over were private boats or a state ferry. That changed in 1956. The James F. Byrnes Bridge, built for $1.5 million, opened the island to cars, and Charles E. Fraser began building Sea Pines Resort. Other planned communities soon copied it. Islanders grew unhappy with how Beaufort County handled all that growth, and in 1983 they incorporated their own town.

  • Fort Walker falls in 1861The Confederate guns of Fort Walker guarded the 2-mile-wide entrance to Port Royal Sound. On November 7, 1861, after the Battle of Port Royal, the fort fell to more than 12,000 Union troops, who renamed it Fort Welles. The island then became a major Union base for the blockade of Savannah and Charleston.
  • Mitchelville and freedomHundreds of freed slaves came to the island once Union troops held it, and here they could buy land, attend school and join the First Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers. The Union built Mitchelville on the north end for them, naming it for General Ormsby M. Mitchel. On May 15, 1865, Major General Quincy Adams Gillmore, headquartered here, ordered that Black people be treated as free citizens of the United States. Many of their Gullah descendants still live here.
  • The Liberty OakCharles Fraser redesigned the entire Harbour Town marina to spare an ancient live oak, which became known as the Liberty Oak. Singer Gregg Russell performed beneath it for over 25 years, and Fraser was buried beside it when he died in 2002. The Heritage golf tournament was first played at Sea Pines in 1969, and it has been a PGA Tour stop ever since.
