About Hazlehurst, Mississippi

Hazlehurst is a city of 3,619 people and the county seat of Copiah County, about 30 miles south of Jackson. Before it existed, the leading town nearby was Gallatin, on the Bayou Pierre in the western part of the county. In 1819 two lawyers, brothers-in-law named Walters and Saunders, arrived from Gallatin, Tennessee, and gave the village the name of the town they had left behind. The legislature incorporated Gallatin in 1829 but repealed its charter on January 18, 1862.

Construction started on November 3, 1865, on a new rail line, the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern, and a town grew up at its stop. The town took its name from Col. George H. Hazlehurst, an engineer on the new line. As Hazlehurst grew, Gallatin shrank to a crossroads. In April 1872 the legislature had the county supervisors put the county seat to a vote. A majority chose Hazlehurst, so Gallatin's brick courthouse was taken apart and put back together in the new town.

  • Deacons for Defense, 1966Black residents here faced violence during the civil rights years. In 1966 and 1967 the armed Deacons for Defense and Justice set up centers in Hazlehurst and nearby Crystal Springs. They guarded protesters who were working with the NAACP on a boycott of white merchants. The boycott pushed for integrated facilities and hiring, and for jobs for African Americans after the civil rights legislation of 1964.
  • The tornado of 1969On January 23, 1969, an F4 tornado struck the south side of Hazlehurst. It killed 11 people in town and damaged or destroyed 175 homes.
  • Robert Johnson's birthplaceThe blues musician Robert Johnson was born in Hazlehurst in 1911, though he is better known for his ties to the Mississippi Delta. A monument to him stands between the Trustmark Bank and the Copiah County Courthouse, which joined the National Register in 1998. His birth home sits near the courthouse.
  • Home of Crimes of the HeartPlaywright Beth Henley was born in Jackson, but her father grew up in Hazlehurst, and she spent much of her childhood here. She set Crimes of the Heart in the town. The play won a Pulitzer Prize and was later made into a movie.
