About Herald Harbor, Maryland
Herald Harbor is a community of 2,869 people in Anne Arundel County, on the tidal Severn River, and nearly a third of its 2.4 square miles is water. The town is named for the Washington Herald, a newspaper in Washington, D.C., which won new readers by handing out small lots here where they could build summer homes. Because of that start, the paper stayed close to the place, bringing boat races and a boys' camp to its shore.
- Outboard races in 1928The Chesapeake and Potomac Outboard Motor Association held its first yearly speed boat regatta here on Labor Day 1928, only four weeks after the group was formed. The Washington Herald sponsored the meet, called the Tri-City Motor Boat Races, and 138 boats entered from Washington, Baltimore, Annapolis and other towns around the Chesapeake Bay. Winners of the various events took home forty-one trophies.
- A summer camp for paperboysThrough June, July and August of 1930, two papers, the Washington Herald and the Washington Times, kept a camp at Herald Harbor for the boys who carried their routes. Fifty carriers stayed each week on the Severn shore, where a sandy beach had a swimming float and diving boards. Each boy covered his own camp fee by bringing in new subscribers.
- Long Point on the SevernThe stretch of Herald Harbor right along the river is known as Long Point on the Severn. It's a well-off neighborhood where most of the landowners are retired.
