About Severna Park, Maryland
Severna Park is a community of 39,933 people in Anne Arundel County, on the land between the Severn and Magothy rivers, about 8 miles north of Annapolis. It started out as a railroad stop called Boone on the Baltimore and Annapolis line. From before World War One, many residents rode those trains to their jobs, playing cards and trading stories along the way.
A popular tale says Oscar Hatton held a contest in 1906 to name the growing community and promised a piece of land to the winner. In the story, the winner was an African-American woman, and she was paid $500 instead of getting the land. Local historian Nelson Molter searched for proof of the contest and found none, so it is most likely a local myth.
- From rail line to trailAfter the trains stopped, the old Baltimore and Annapolis rail bed was turned into the B&A Rail Trail in 1990. In 1996 the trail became part of the East Coast Greenway, and its headquarters sit on Earleigh Heights Road in Severna Park.
- Severn School since 1914Rolland Teel founded Severn School in 1914 as a private high school to prepare young men for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. It still teaches students in Severna Park today.
