About Hobson, Montana
Hobson is a city of 179 people in Judith Basin County, Montana. Long before the town existed, freight wagons forded the Judith River here on the route from Fort Benton to the Musselshell River country, and the crossing came to be called the "Gateway to the Judith Basin." A post office named Philbrook opened there in 1881.
In 1908 the Great Northern Railway ran its Billings and Northern branch line through the valley and started a new town four miles west of Philbrook. People argued for a while over what to call the new stop, but the railroad chose Hobson, the name of the man who owned the townsite.
- Hollywood came in 1973In the summer of 1973, Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges came to Hobson to shoot scenes for Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, which was released in 1974. The crew filmed inside St. John's Lutheran Church, in the wheat field next to it and at the Black Bull Bar & Steakhouse.
- From open range to wheatThomas Murray, a homesteader born in Scotland, reached the Judith Basin in 1883 and grazed cattle and sheep on 160 acres of open prairie. By the turn of the century his ranch, called the Meadow Brook Stock Farm, also raised wheat and bred cattle, hogs, sheep and horses. The railroad gave ranchers like Murray an easier way to ship to market, and new towns such as Hobson grew up along its tracks.
- The Titans of Hobson and MooreHobson Public School teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade. For sports it joins with nearby Moore, and the combined teams play as the Titans. The town's news comes from the Judith Basin Press, a weekly paper.
