About Moccasin, Montana
Moccasin was founded in 1907 and named for the Moccasin Mountains. An older Moccasin post office and stage station stood where the Fort Benton Road crossed Warm Spring Creek. That post office closed after the Montana Railroad was built, and the new town took over its name.
In 1908 the Montana legislature created an agricultural research center just west of Moccasin. It taught dry land farming to newly arrived homesteaders. After the homestead bust, the center kept developing machinery and new crops that raised wheat yields in the area.
- What the town came throughWildfires struck Moccasin in 1916, 1919, 1922 and 1955. The fires burned an entire block of buildings. The town never fully came back from them.
