About Utica, Montana
Utica is an unincorporated community of 23 people in the western part of Judith Basin County, roughly 40 miles from Lewistown. It was the first settlement in its basin, a cowboy town on the open range, and the Judith River Ranger Station sits close by.
In the mid-1890s, prospectors found Yogo sapphires in the country near Utica. Around the same years, a young cowhand who worked these hills would make the little town known well beyond Montana through his paintings and stories.
“The paved road ends at the earlier settlement of the basin, the cowboy town of Utica, made famous by the paintings and writings of Charles M. Russell, the state's most famous artist.”
- Russell learns the frontierCharles M. Russell came to the Utica country as a young cowhand, hired by Jake Hoover, a local rancher and gold miner. Russell later said Hoover taught him most of what he knew about frontier life, and the two men remained friends until the end of their lives.
- A Quiet Day in Utica, 1907In 1907 Russell painted the town in A Quiet Day In Utica, a picture first called Tinning a Dog. Real townspeople stand between the hitching post and the door of the general store: Jake Hoover, store owner Charles Lehman, Millie Ringold, a local businesswoman who had once been enslaved, and Russell himself.
- A town that keeps its pastUtica's museum works with a local history group and the town's hunting and fishing club to keep the town's past in view. Montana's Historic Landscapes found that Utica now explains its past to visitors far better than it did in 1984, and better than almost any other small town in Montana.
