About Hoosick, New York
Hoosick is a town of 6,711 people in the northeastern corner of Rensselaer County, with Vermont along its eastern line and Washington County to the north. It takes its name from the Hoosic River, which runs through it. The land was granted as the Hoosick Patent in 1688 and became the District of Hoosick in 1772. The town was organized in 1788 while it was still part of Albany County, and it passed to Rensselaer County when that county was formed in 1791.
- The Battle of BenningtonThe Battle of Bennington, a fight of the American Revolution, was not fought in Bennington. It took place on John Green's farm at Walloomsac, a hamlet of Hoosick on Route 67, east of North Hoosick. The Bennington Battlefield is in that hamlet.
- Simon Fraser, born in MapletownThe explorer Simon Fraser was born in Mapletown, now a neighborhood of East Hoosick. He went on to chart much of what is now British Columbia, where a river, a mountain and Simon Fraser University carry his name.
- Grandma Moses found in 1938The painter Grandma Moses, who lived from 1860 to 1961, first drew notice in 1938, when her work was spotted in a drugstore in the village of Hoosick Falls, at the corner of John Street and Route 22. She is buried in Hoosick.
- Buskirk's covered bridgeThe hamlet of Buskirk, on Route 67 in the town's northwestern corner, went by the name Buskirk Bridge in earlier days. The Buskirk Covered Bridge there is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
