About Schaghticoke, New York

Schaghticoke is a town of 7,445 people on the northern edge of Rensselaer County, north of Troy. It takes its name from the Schaghticoke, a tribe that came together in the seventeenth century from the surviving members of several peoples of eastern New York and New England. Today that tribe's reservation lies in Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Before independence, the city of Albany owned this land, and most people here rented from the city and lived under its government. Tory raids made the place dangerous, so settlers arrived slowly. Once the land filled in, it belonged to Albany County until Rensselaer County was created in 1791.

  • A Tree of Welfare in 1675In 1675 Governor Andros of colonial New York planted a Tree of Welfare where Tomhannock Creek meets the Hoosic River, a spot already called Schaghticoke, "the place where the waters mingle." The tree marked a friendship among the English, the Dutch and the Schaghticoke Indians. These were Mohican refugees from New England, welcomed because they agreed to help defend the English against the French and the Iroquois. They remained here until 1754.
  • Mills on the HoosicAfter the Revolution, many newcomers from England and Ireland settled in Schaghticoke. Mills powered by the Hoosic River grew up in town, and the farmers around them raised crops for local industries. Farming is still strong here in the 21st century, even as new homes spread across the town.
